Get Licensed
To work as a professional security guard in Alabama, you must be licensed by the Alabama Security Regulatory Board (ASRB). Here’s how the process works from start to finish.
- Step 1: Choose Your License Type
- Step 2: Confirm Eligibility
- Step 3: Complete State-Approved Training
- Step 4: Submit Your Application
- Step 5: Receive Your License
- License Renewal
- Unarmed Security Guard – Requires a minimum of 8 hours of training.
- Armed Security Guard – Requires 8 hours of unarmed training plus 14 hours of firearm-specific training and live qualification.
- Certified Trainer (Level I or II) – For those who want to train others; Level II trainers may supervise and conduct firearm instruction.
Applicants must:
- Be at least 18 (unarmed) or 21 (armed)
- Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident
- Have no felony or disqualifying misdemeanor convictions
- Possess a valid government-issued photo ID
- Pass a fingerprint-based background check
Training must be completed through an ASRB-certified trainer and must cover:
- Powers of arrest and legal limitations
- Conflict resolution and de-escalation
- Emergency response protocols
- Use of force and ethical conduct
- Firearm safety (for armed guards)

Mail your application packet to the ASRB with:
- Completed application form
- Training completion certificate
- Fingerprint cards and ALEA background check release
- Payment of required fees ($75 license + $37 background check, subject to change)
Once approved, you’ll receive a license valid for two years. A temporary license may be issued while the application is being processed.
- Must be renewed every 2 years
- Armed guards must complete annual firearm requalification
